According to reports, the notorious scam parks in Myawaddy, Myanmar, are showing signs of resurgence. Not only are new parks being rebuilt, but over 9,300 recruitment messages have also been posted on social media. Some Myanmar analysts say that the Myanmar military's earlier crackdown on scam parks might have been a mere "show-off operation." Ming Pao reported today (1st) that the Myawaddy area in southeastern Kayin State, bordering Thailand across the river, is a hub for scam parks. Since last October, under pressure from China, the Myanmar military has strongly cracked down on the Myawaddy parks, demolishing over 630 related buildings. However, the report quotes Myanmar International News as stating that after the original parks were destroyed, scam syndicates are shifting their operations inland or to more hidden areas controlled by armed forces. New scam bases have appeared in some city blocks of Myawaddy and the nearby Shwe Kokko mountain area. Furthermore, China's "Red Star News," citing satellite imagery, pointed out that in an area suspected to be a new base, Thitkate, which was an empty lot in June, had already developed a cluster of buildings by August. The report states that scam groups have posted over 9,300 recruitment messages on social media to date. Some Myanmar political analysts say that the military government and certain armed groups profiting billions of dollars from scam operations are using these "show-off" crackdowns as political cover. Myanmar media had previously reported two days ago that the Myawaddy scam parks, which were jointly raided and destroyed by China and Myanmar last year, have shown signs of resurgence this year, with new parks being rebuilt and partially completed.
