The White House released Trump's 2.0 National Security Strategy late last year, which indicates Trump's intention to focus more military power on the Western Hemisphere to counter issues like immigration and drugs.
According to foreign media reports, Trump stated in his speech at the UN General Assembly in late September that the U.S. military's surprise raid earlier this year to arrest then-Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, followed by an oil agreement with the interim government, underscored the U.S.'s resolve to act in the region.
He said, "Our actions in Venezuela prove that the United States will no longer allow threats against us to take root in the Western Hemisphere. If necessary, we will use our unparalleled military power to ensure America's vital national interests."
Trump also met with Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodriguez, during the UN General Assembly. This was Rodriguez's first visit to the United States since the U.S. military arrested Maduro in January.
