The Speaker of the Swedish Parliament, Andreas Norlen, announced today (2nd) that he has asked Magdalena Andersson, leader of the Social Democrats, to try again to form a coalition government. Andersson's previous attempt to form a government failed. According to Norlen's statement, Andersson must report the results to him by the 12th. Norlen stated at a press conference: "Based on the consultations I have conducted, I have decided to entrust the leader of the Social Democrats, Andersson, to continue her task of forming a government." In the parliamentary election held in Sweden on September 13, the center-left opposition bloc secured 176 seats, surpassing the 173 seats won by the right-wing bloc led by outgoing Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. The right-wing bloc includes the anti-immigrant Sweden Democrats. Norlen first asked Andersson to begin coalition negotiations on September 18, but she abandoned the attempt on September 28 due to her inability to unite the other three parties in her bloc. These parties have deep ideological differences, with the main conflict arising between the socialist Left Party and the Centre Party. At the time, it was speculated that the Speaker of Parliament might hand over the task of forming a government to Kristersson. Norlen told AFP: "Four parties in parliament currently hold a majority, and all consider Andersson to be the primary candidate for prime minister." He added: "Therefore, I believe it is reasonable to let her explore coalition options within her own bloc in the Swedish political arena first and continue the task I previously assigned her." When asked if Kristersson might have a chance to form a government if Andersson fails again, Norlen replied: "Anything is possible." However, he also indicated that he wanted to see "how Andersson's attempt progresses" first. Kristersson told the media that, given the election results, Andersson "rightfully" should be the one to face the test of forming a government first. Norlen emphasized that Andersson's task of forming a government will officially begin on the 5th. He stated at the press conference: "I want to give the parties some time to think before resuming the formal process." Andersson herself issued a statement on social media, welcoming the decision. She said: "I will spend the weekend thinking about how to move this process forward. I hope other parties will also reconsider their positions." The Speaker of the Swedish Parliament can nominate a prime minister candidate up to four times, after which the parliament votes. If the fourth attempt also fails, an early election must be held. Sweden is accustomed to lengthy coalition negotiations. It took 37 days to form a government after the 2022 election and 134 days after the 2018 election.
