To strengthen border security and respond to increasing hybrid threats, the European Union will invest an additional 130 million Euros (approximately 4.66 billion New Taiwan Dollars) in drone technology. Concurrently, the responsibilities of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) will be enhanced. According to a report by Euronews, the EU Justice and Home Affairs Ministers met in Luxembourg from the 1st to the 2nd, where a resolution was made to increase investment in drone technology. This meeting was the first face-to-face discussion among ministers on immigration and border control issues since the onset of the Ceuta crisis. Citing EU Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner, the report stated that the use of new technologies and drones is crucial for border protection and also for safeguarding the EU's critical infrastructure. Following discussions, it was decided to add 130 million Euros to existing plans. The existing plan mentioned by Brunner was announced by the European Commission in February of this year, with a budget of 250 million Euros for the "Action Plan on Drones and Counter-Drones Security." This plan primarily assists member states in investing in land and maritime border surveillance. Investment targets include the procurement and integration of drone and counter-drone systems into national surveillance networks, as well as other technologies for countering hybrid threats. Brunner also mentioned that an additional 170 million Euros will be provided through the EU's "Border Management and Visa Instruments (BMVI)" to Frontex and national border security authorities for the procurement of unmanned border surveillance equipment. The report indicates that with this additional funding, the EU's total investment in new border surveillance technologies has exceeded 500 million Euros, demonstrating Europe's growing emphasis on border security. Meanwhile, amidst rising crisis management needs and increasing emerging hybrid threats, it is widely believed that the responsibilities and importance of Frontex will be further strengthened.
