Forest and land fires in Indonesia have been burning for months, producing toxic haze that has enveloped parts of Southeast Asia. Conservation groups report that in the past two months, dozens of critically endangered orangutans have been rescued from the wildfires. According to Agence France-Presse, the local wildfires have caused months of air pollution, forcing schools to close, leading to a surge in respiratory illnesses in humans and animals, and restricting outdoor activities for people in countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. Indonesian conservation groups are working to save wildlife from the fires, including orangutans. The natural conservation agency in West Kalimantan Province, Borneo, along with related non-profit organizations, stated yesterday (the 17th) that since August 6th, specialized teams have evacuated 51 orangutans from various locations in the province. According to air quality monitoring agency IQAir, Singapore and Malaysia's capital, Kuala Lumpur, have once again been listed among the top 5 most polluted cities globally. With the exacerbation of the El Niño phenomenon, fires in Borneo and Indonesia's Sumatra Island continue to emit smoke. Source link: https://www.rti.org.tw/news?uid=3&pid=238338
