[Cross-Strait] Report: 55% of China's AI Computing Power Used for Short Dramas and Video Production

Under the vigorous development of the AI industry by the Chinese authorities, "Chinese All-Digital" (中文在線), a listed company in China, recently released a business report to investors stating that 55% of domestic AI tokens in China are consumed in the generation of short dramas and videos, 24% are used for e-commerce advertising, and only 15% is truly invested in research and development. This has sparked discussion on the topic of Chinese AI's "more than half of its computing power used for creating 'satisfying dramas'."
According to reports from The Paper (澎湃新聞) and related articles, the above data comes from the "Investor Relations Activity Record Form" recently published by Chinese All-Digital. Based on this data, the consumption of tokens for AI short dramas and video generation in China has already exceeded twice the amount used for software research and development, making "half of the computing power used for creating 'satisfying dramas' (referring to relaxing and stress-relieving dramas)" a hot topic in Chinese public opinion.
Chinese All-Digital's analysis suggests that the core reason for the high consumption of AI tokens is that short dramas are a business that demands extremely high speed in video generation and token turnover.
The article points out that the phenomenon is worth questioning: when China's computing power is directed towards a single content form with such high density, is it an "efficient path for technological implementation" or a "collective consumption of overcapacity"?
According to reports, the "Report on AI-Driven Innovation and Development of Global Micro-Short Dramas," jointly released by the Development Research Center of China's National Radio and Television Administration and other units, indicates that the global micro-short drama market will enter a period of explosive growth in 2025, with a total market size approaching 18 billion US dollars (approximately 587 billion New Taiwan dollars). The Chinese market alone will exceed 14 billion US dollars, accounting for 77.78% of the global market.
Other data shows that from January to August this year, as many as 430,000 micro-short dramas were launched in China, which is 13 times the total for the entire year of 2025.
The report points out that simulated human dramas produced by AI typically consume 2 to 3 times more tokens than AI animated dramas due to stricter requirements for visuals. Furthermore, in the actual production process, to meet the director's stringent demands for plot narration and camera work, production teams need to repeatedly generate and select scenes, thus consuming a larger amount of tokens.
However, some Chinese AI companies disagree with this assessment. Liu Xing, the public relations representative for Doubao, ByteDance's AI platform, posted that only about 10% of their company's total computing power is used for training and inference of video generation models.
