The U.S. federal government continues to advance large-scale crackdowns on immigration. The U.S. Department of State announced on the 20th that President Donald Trump's administration has revoked 300,000 U.S. visas since his second term began. Data shows that the pace of visa revocations has accelerated in recent weeks. The State Department stated in an August 10 announcement that 175,000 visas have been revoked since Trump took office in January 2025. Trump stated that crackdowns on immigration and deportation operations are aimed at improving domestic public safety. However, human rights groups argue that these actions infringe upon due process and freedom of speech, creating an unsafe environment, particularly for minority ethnic groups who worry about racial profiling in law enforcement. State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott noted in a post on X while releasing the latest data that the Trump administration "has revoked visas in numbers and at a pace exceeding any previous administration in history." Pigott added that the Trump administration "takes a zero-tolerance approach to foreigners who are in our country unlawfully, fraudulently, or pose a threat to national security while holding a visa." Among various visa revocation cases, human rights advocates particularly condemn two situations: one targeting foreign protesters demonstrating against the U.S. ally Israel's war in Gaza, and another targeting foreigners who made comments on social media regarding the alleged assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. In addition to attempting to deport foreign protesters, the Trump administration has also intensified scrutiny of the social media activities of immigrants and visa applicants. Human rights advocates point out that the government uses "national security" as a pretext to target critics and leverages isolated fraud cases to launch widespread crackdowns on entire immigrant communities, including the Somali diaspora in Minnesota. Despite Trump's campaign rhetoric in 2024 advocating for crackdowns on illegal immigration, the administration has also raised the bar for legal immigration, for instance, by imposing high fees on certain work visas.
