French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking to the media in Qatar today (21st), stated that some politicians are using the unrest in France for political gain, making "foolish remarks," which is seen as a subtle criticism of U.S. President Donald Trump. According to AFP, with the U.S. midterm elections approaching on November 3rd, Trump recently claimed at a Republican rally that France "is burning" and attributed the situation to the EU and French immigration policies. During his interview on the 21st, Macron said, "Some people are using France for their campaigns. Leaders who are campaigning, whether in this region or across the Atlantic"; he added that these individuals make "foolish remarks" for political gain. These words seemed to point towards Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Israel is set to hold its parliamentary elections on October 27th, where the far-right ruling coalition led by incumbent Prime Minister Netanyahu faces a tough battle to retain power. On the 20th, Netanyahu commented on the French riots, stating that France has been "invaded by extreme Islamism." The current wave of demonstrations in France originated from student protests against a lack of educational resources, which quickly spread and gained support from trade unions, farmer groups, and "Yellow Vest" movement supporters. The protest demands also transformed into a broad social protest against Macron's government and its fiscal policies. Supporters of the "Yellow Vest" movement announced today that they will hold another large-scale demonstration this weekend to express dissatisfaction with inflation. Since the unrest in France began, several countries, including the U.S., China, and Germany, have issued travel advisories for their citizens in France.
