According to a report by Taiwan-Thailand Times on the 21st, the 2026 City Safety Index released by Numbeo, a global platform for cost of living and city quality data, ranks the northern Thai tourist city of Chiang Mai first in Southeast Asia with 77.9 points, slightly higher than Singapore's 77.5 points, and 19th globally. The survey indicates that Chiang Mai received high ratings in aspects such as perceived risk of crime and safety when walking alone.
The Numbeo City Safety Index is compiled based on questionnaire data filled out by platform users, covering concerns about crime, perceived risk of assault or robbery, and safety when walking alone during the day and night.
As the data comes from subjective user evaluations and not official police crime statistics, the rankings reflect respondents' perceptions of urban safety and cannot be directly equated with actual crime rates or overall public safety performance.
According to the published data, Chiang Mai's safety index for 2026 is 77.9 points, while Singapore's is 77.5 points, a difference of 0.4 points. In terms of global rankings, Chiang Mai is 19th, and Singapore is 23rd.
Crime-related indicators show that Chiang Mai's crime index is 21.93 points, considered a low level. Specifically, respondents' concern about the risk of assault is 13.42 points, concern about robbery or theft of property is 14.72 points, and the perceived score for violent crime issues is 19.54 points.
The above values are all in the lower range, indicating that participating users have relatively low concerns about related crime risks, but this does not mean that criminal incidents do not exist at all.
Safety perception when walking alone is one of the aspects for which Chiang Mai received higher ratings. The survey shows that the safety index for walking alone during the day is 92.87 points, and at night it is 81.09 points, both falling within a very high safety rating range.
This result reflects that respondents have high confidence in Chiang Mai's daily outings and nighttime walking environment, but travelers should still take necessary safety precautions based on the actual location, time, and personal circumstances.
In addition to safety ratings, Chiang Mai also achieved a score of 84.69 in Numbeo's Healthcare Index, which is in a very high rating range. This survey covers aspects such as the professionalism of medical staff, medical equipment, service quality, and accessibility of healthcare.
However, the Healthcare Index is also based on user evaluations and cannot fully reflect the distribution of medical resources in different areas. The accessibility of healthcare and transportation convenience in remote communities still needs further assessment through other data.
Furthermore, the City Safety Index primarily measures perceptions related to crime and does not fully cover risks such as traffic accidents, air pollution, or natural disasters. Therefore, Chiang Mai's high ranking in the safety index does not mean that all travel and living risks are lower than in other cities.
This survey can serve as a reference for observing perceptions of urban safety and living environments, but a comprehensive assessment of Chiang Mai's public safety still requires combining objective data such as official crime statistics, traffic safety, medical resources, and environmental quality.
