How can foreign students stay in Taiwan after graduation?

After graduating in Taiwan, if you want to stay and work, in addition to finding job openings, you also need to handle residency and employment status.
Some people have already graduated but haven't found a job yet; others receive a job offer only to discover that the company is unfamiliar with the hiring process for foreign employees. Before starting the application, confirm which situation you are currently in.
Not having found a job after graduation doesn't mean you must leave Taiwan immediately. Eligible foreign graduates can apply for an extension of stay after graduation, using this period to find a job and handle subsequent status.
However, be aware that your original student residency status may not automatically remain valid just because the expiration date on your residence permit has not yet passed. After graduation, you should proactively confirm the school's reporting timeline, residency expiration date, and application procedures, and avoid waiting until the last few days to handle them.
The purpose of an extended stay is to allow you to legally remain in Taiwan; it does not necessarily equate to having obtained formal work-based residency status.
Found a job: Don't just confirm the reporting date
After receiving a job offer, besides salary and working hours, you should also ask the company:
· Has the company hired foreign employees before?
· Does this position comply with employment regulations for foreigners?
· What type of employment method will the company use?
· Is a work permit required?
· Which department will assist with residency status afterward?
An employer's willingness to hire you does not mean all procedures are completed. Before officially starting work, you should confirm whether you meet the conditions for legal employment.
Meeting the points threshold doesn't mean any job can be applied for
The points system for overseas Chinese and foreign students to work in Taiwan is a common pathway for many graduates to stay and work. The points system comprehensively considers factors such as education level, salary, language proficiency, work experience, and special skills.
However, reaching the standard score only means your personal qualifications meet the basic threshold. You also need to confirm:
· Whether the company meets the hiring qualifications
· Whether the job content falls within the applicable scope
· Whether there is a formal employment contract
· Whether the relevant documents are complete
· The points system is not a universal work permit that allows you to work freely at any company.
[What to do if the company is unfamiliar with the system?]
Some companies are not unwilling to hire foreign students but lack relevant experience.
You can directly ask during the interview:
· Has the company hired foreign employees before?
· Can this position utilize the system for overseas Chinese and foreign students to work in Taiwan?
· Which department will assist with work permits or residency conversion?
· Can the company provide a formal employment contract?
You can also prepare your academic qualifications, language certificates, internship experience, and points calculation results in advance, and provide official application information to HR for reference.
However, the final approval for application still depends on the company and the competent authorities confirming based on the actual job opening.
⚠️ Don't confuse these three terms ⚠️
"Extended Stay"
Allows graduates to continue seeking employment in Taiwan after their student residency ends.
"Work Permit"
Confirms whether a foreigner can legally engage in specific work. Whether an application is needed depends on individual status and the applicable system.
"Work-Based Residency"
After finding a compliant job, using employment as the formal reason for residency.
In simple terms:
Extended stay deals with "whether you can continue to stay," work eligibility deals with "whether you can do this job," and work-based residency deals with "what status you will live in Taiwan with afterward."
The three most easily overlooked things:
First, do not assume that your student residency status will automatically continue after graduation.
Second, do not just listen to the company say "we will handle it"; confirm who is actually responsible and what stage the process is at.
Third, do not accept job offers with unclear job content, requests for bank account information, or claims that you can start working before completing procedures, just because you are eager to stay in Taiwan.
Working in Taiwan is not just about finding a job; it also involves successfully transitioning from student status to legal employment and residency status.
Confirming your current stage early, organizing supporting documents, and proactively discussing employment methods with the company can usually prevent discovering that procedures are incomplete only when your residency is about to expire.

‼️Starting in 2026, some recent overseas Chinese and foreign graduates can work during their extended stay period‼️
In the past, many students thought that even after applying for an extended stay after graduation, they still couldn't work and had to wait for the employer to obtain a work permit before starting.
However, starting in 2026, the regulations have been significantly adjusted. According to the revised system for attracting and employing foreign professionals, recent overseas Chinese and foreign graduates with an associate's degree or higher obtained in Taiwan can engage in full-time or part-time work during their post-graduation job-seeking extended stay period, generally without needing a separate work permit.
This new policy provides greater flexibility for graduates during their job search and status transition period, but there are still several points to confirm:
· Whether you are a recent graduate eligible for the new policy
· Whether you have completed the extended stay after graduation
· Whether the degree obtained in Taiwan meets the requirements
· Whether the extended stay is still within its validity period
· Whether the work involved requires other qualifications or permits by law
Do not overlook your own status conditions just because a friend said, "You can start working directly after graduation." The applicable methods may still vary depending on the graduation year, academic qualifications, nationality, or type of residency.
Before starting work, confirm with the Workforce Development Agency or the Immigration Agency whether your individual case meets the requirements for exemption from applying for a work permit.
Furthermore, being able to work during the extended stay period does not mean you will not need to change your status later. If you have found stable employment, you should still confirm with your employer which employment and residency method should be adopted afterward, and avoid waiting until your extended stay is about to expire to handle it.
