Can Taiwan's tap water be drunk? The difference between boiling, filtering, and buying water

People new to living in Taiwan often notice one thing: even though tap water meets drinking water standards, many households still boil it, use water filters, or even regularly buy bottled water.
This doesn't mean Taiwan's tap water is unsafe, but rather that between the water plant and the home faucet, it passes through community water tanks, building pipelines, and household equipment. The conditions of different living environments can affect the taste and drinking methods of the water.
Tap water supplied by water plants meets drinking water standards
Taiwan Water Corporation's water supply must comply with the drinking water quality standards set by the government. Taipei Water Department also states that the supplied tap water has undergone treatment and water quality monitoring, meeting drinking water standards.
However, "water from the plant meeting standards" and "water from the home faucet being directly drinkable" are not exactly the same thing.
Most apartments and buildings store tap water in underground cisterns or rooftop water tanks before distributing it to each household. If water tanks are not cleaned regularly, pipelines are old, or if a residence has not used water for a long time, the water quality and taste may be affected. Taipei Water Department recommends that building water tanks and cisterns should be cleaned and maintained at least once a year.
Taiwanese households habitually boil tap water before drinking it, mainly for several reasons:
· To reduce concerns about water tanks, pipelines, and microorganisms
· To reduce the taste of disinfectant in the water
· To improve the taste
· To continue long-standing family habits
Tap water is usually disinfected with chlorine during the purification process to reduce the risk of microbial contamination. A slight chlorine smell does not mean the water is substandard, but some people are more sensitive to the taste, so they boil or filter it first. Boiling can also reduce some volatile disinfection byproducts.
Water filters do not guarantee permanent safety
Water filters can improve odor, remove impurities, or enhance taste, but filter cartridges need to be replaced regularly according to product instructions.
If filter cartridges are not replaced for a long time, or if the equipment is not cleaned, it can actually breed bacteria. Before installing a water filter, one should understand whether it primarily treats odor, sediment, hardness, or other substances; a higher price does not necessarily mean it is more suitable.
Renters can also ask their landlords or building management:
· How often are the water tanks cleaned?
· Have the building's pipelines been updated?
· Does the kitchen water come from the same water tank?
· How long has it been since the existing in-room water filter's cartridge was last replaced?
Water filters of unknown origin or those not maintained for a long time are not necessarily more reliable than simply boiling water.
Bottled water is convenient, but not necessarily the only option
Buying water is suitable for those who have just moved, are staying short-term, or are unsure about the condition of their residence's water tank and pipelines. However, consistently buying bottled water long-term increases both expenses and plastic waste.
Some people choose to:
· Drink boiled tap water
· Boil water after filtering it
· Use water dispensers or community drinking water facilities
· Buy bottled or bulk water
There is no single method that suits everyone; one should choose based on residence facilities, water quality, and personal needs.
If the water from the faucet exhibits any of the following conditions, stop drinking it immediately:
· Noticeably cloudy or yellowish color
· Oily, putrid, or other strong unusual odors
· Large amounts of unknown sediment in the water
· The community has just cleaned the water tank, repaired pipelines, or resumed water supply
· After a water outage, when water is restored, but the quality has not returned to normal
One can run the water for a while to see if it clears up. If the abnormality persists, contact the landlord, building management, or local water authority. Do not rely solely on boiling to treat pollution from unknown sources.
After typhoons, earthquakes, or large-scale water outages, pay attention to the latest drinking water announcements from local governments and water supply authorities.
Understand the water supply environment when renting
For renters, understanding the actual conditions of their residence is more important than debating whether "Taiwan's tap water can be drunk directly."
Water supplied by water plants must legally meet drinking water standards, but after the water enters the building, water tank cleanliness, pipeline condition, and household equipment all affect the final drinking experience.
When unsure about the residence's conditions, boiling water before drinking is a simple and common practice; if using a water filter, remember to maintain and replace the cartridges. What truly needs attention is not just where the water comes from, but also what equipment it passes through to reach the cup.
