[International] Ceuta Immigration Crisis Controlled, EU Strengthens Border Security

On the 4th, the European Union held an emergency meeting of interior ministers regarding the influx of Moroccan migrants into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. EU Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner, stated that no migrants successfully entered the Schengen Area as a result, and the EU's border security issues have been resolved. Now, the EU must act in unity and learn from this incident.
Following the emergency video conference of EU interior ministers, Brunner held a press conference on the afternoon of the 4th to explain the meeting's situation and discussions.
Brunner said that the events of the past few days were a test of the EU's resilience and a test of overall external border security. From the outset, the European Commission provided financial and operational support to Spain, including emergency financial aid to strengthen the protection of Ceuta's external borders, support for repatriation efforts, and prevention of further migration into the EU. In reality, no one entered mainland Spain, and the Schengen Area was not affected.
He stated that the integrity of the Schengen Area was maintained, which is the result of close and continuous cooperation between Spain, Morocco, and the European Commission in recent days. He also thanked the Spanish government and the administrative authorities of Ceuta for their efforts in restoring order and for their close cooperation with Morocco to ensure the swift return of individuals.
Brunner further pointed out that the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) has deployed over 30 personnel in Ceuta, ready to provide further assistance at any time. Additionally, organizations such as Europol and the EU Agency for Asylum (EUAA) are also prepared to help Spain.
He emphasized that, under the current circumstances, the EU has undoubtedly passed this test. The key now is for the EU to act in unity, take action, and learn from these events. This was also the focus of today's meeting.
Brunner stated that since the "European Migration and Asylum Pact" came into effect on June 12th this year, its results have gradually been reflected in the numbers. Moreover, the new regulations implement faster screening procedures, border management, and repatriation processes, which are very important elements from both security and migration perspectives and help to further curb illegal immigration.
Recently, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen mentioned strengthening measures in five areas to address migration issues. In the meeting on the 4th, Brunner discussed the content of these measures and received approval.
The five areas are: "Strengthening cooperation with neighboring countries," "Enhancing external border security," "Rapid returns," "Improving and strengthening early warning systems," and "Dismantling human smuggling networks."
Brunner stressed that Spain and its people can certainly rely on the EU's support and strength to overcome current challenges. At the same time, the EU should not make any misjudgments; it will plug loopholes and jointly continue to protect the EU's external borders. (Editor: Zhong Jinlong)
