The Taiwan-Thailand Times reported today (6th) that the latest statistics released by the British aviation data analysis firm OAG show that Vietnam's aviation market capacity surpassed Thailand in July this year, becoming the second-largest aviation market in Southeast Asia. Vietnam had 7.4 million seats in the month, an increase of 5.6% compared to the same period last year; Thailand, due to a 3% decline in capacity, dropped to 6.9 million seats, ranking third.
According to the report, Indonesia remains the largest aviation market in Southeast Asia, with 10.9 million seats in July, a slight increase of 0.3% compared to the same period last year. Vietnam, with its continuously growing aviation demand and capacity expansion, has surpassed Thailand for the first time, while Malaysia and the Philippines rank fourth and fifth, respectively.
OAG pointed out that the decline in aviation market capacity in Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines is mainly due to the ongoing tensions in the Middle East, which have led to rising international oil prices and increased aviation fuel costs. Consequently, airlines have adjusted their route layouts and capacity configurations to reduce operating costs.
In terms of airlines, Vietnam Airlines became the largest airline by capacity in Southeast Asia in July, offering 2.81 million seats that month, a slight increase of 0.1% compared to the same period last year, maintaining its regional leading position.
Overall, the total number of seats in the Southeast Asian aviation market in July was approximately 50.4 million, a decrease of 1.2% compared to the same period last year. The report analyzes that the geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East have driven up fuel prices, increasing the operational pressure on airlines and becoming a significant factor slowing down the growth of the regional aviation market.
The report also indicates that affected by continuously rising operating costs, several Southeast Asian airlines have recently reduced some international routes to control expenses and improve route operational efficiency. The industry expects that the future performance of the aviation market will continue to be influenced by factors such as international oil prices, geopolitical situations, and changes in travel demand. Airlines will also continue to adjust their capacity configurations to maintain market competitiveness and operational stability. (Editor: Liu Xianghua)
