[International] Ceuta Immigration Crisis Escalates Diplomatic Dispute; Spain Implements Border Controls on Travelers Entering from Italy

The Spanish government announced on the 7th that it would implement border controls on flights and ships from Italy for one month starting from midnight on the 8th (6 AM Taiwan time on the 8th), in response to similar measures taken by Italy, escalating the dispute between the two EU countries.
The Spanish government issued a statement indicating that due to the continuous pressure of irregular immigration, Madrid decided on the 7th to implement countermeasures, conducting passport, nationality, and visa checks on Italian travelers and travelers from other countries arriving from Italy.
These inspection measures will continue until September 7th, unless "the circumstances leading to the implementation of this measure change, making it necessary to adjust this deadline."
Following the influx of approximately 78,000 migrants into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco, Italy also imposed similar restrictive measures on Spain a week ago, conducting passport, nationality, and visa checks on Spanish citizens and citizens of other countries entering Italy.
Spain had earlier requested Italy to revoke the inspection measures by the 9th. However, Rome responded that it would not accept Spain's "ultimatum" and stated that they would maintain the decision to suspend the Schengen Agreement at least until August 15th, and "until the risks to Italy's security and terrorism are completely eliminated."
Italy does not share a border with Spain. Last week, Italy stated that the suspension of the Schengen Agreement, which allows for the free movement of people, was to prevent any migrants entering Ceuta from traveling to Italy.
However, Madrid refuted this stance, calling it an "untrue statement" without factual basis, as any migrants entering Ceuta could not possibly enter the Schengen area.
The decision by Italy to suspend the Schengen Agreement has received support from Finland and Denmark, and the Czech Republic has also called for the suspension of Spain's Schengen area eligibility.
Most of the migrants who arrived in Ceuta last week returned to Morocco within a few days.
