[International] Malaysia Airlines Mandates Drug Tests for Pilots; Those Incomplete Will Not Be Allowed to Fly

A Malaysia Airlines pilot was arrested in Indonesia on suspicion of drug trafficking. Malaysia Airlines announced today (7th) that it will implement mandatory drug testing for all its pilots. Those who do not complete the screening within the specified time limit will not be allowed to perform flight duties.
The pilot is suspected of carrying approximately 25 kilograms of ecstasy pills and a small amount of amphetamines. He was apprehended after arriving at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Indonesia from Kuala Lumpur and will undergo judicial investigation according to Indonesian law. Malaysia Airlines stated that it will fully cooperate with the relevant authorities' investigation.
According to media reports such as Free Malaysia Today and New Straits Times, the 39-year-old pilot involved tested positive for amphetamines, ecstasy pills, and cocaine in his urine test.
Malaysia Airlines Group President and CEO Nasaruddin A. Bakar stated that Malaysia Airlines has a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of misconduct and is implementing mandatory drug testing for its active pilots to further enhance flight safety measures.
This testing by Malaysia Airlines covers its 1,260 pilots and is expected to be completed by August 15th. Pilots who do not complete the screening within the specified period will not be allowed to perform flight duties. Mandatory drug testing will also be expanded to cabin crew members in the future.
Malaysia Airlines pointed out that the pilot involved was traveling as an observer at the time of the incident and was not part of the flight crew for that flight. The flight was operated by two other qualified pilots.
