[Politics] Uganda Refuses Entry to Taiwanese Passport Holders; Ministry of Foreign Affairs Continues Negotiations

Media reports indicate that in recent times, the African nation of Uganda has seen cases of Taiwanese citizens having their passports detained by local law enforcement and being denied entry. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed today (the 8th) that it has recently received information about individuals being detained by immigration officials at Ugandan airports and denied entry. The Representative Office in Somaliland will continue to communicate and negotiate with Uganda regarding relevant visa issues.
United Daily News reported today that a Taiwanese tourist traveled to Uganda for sightseeing in early August but was denied entry by Ugandan immigration officials at the airport and even sent back on the same flight. Another Taiwanese individual legally working in Uganda had their passport confiscated upon arrival and has not yet had it returned.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated today that it has recently received information about individuals being detained by immigration officials at Ugandan airports and denied entry, and that these situations are being monitored. Furthermore, the Representative Office in Somaliland, which also oversees Uganda, provided necessary assistance to the affected individuals through the Ugandan Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce at the earliest opportunity.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained that it is understood that these cases may be related to the Taiwanese government's temporary suspension of visa issuance and entry for Ugandan citizens, effective June 2nd, in response to the escalating Ebola epidemic. The Representative Office in Somaliland will continue to negotiate with Uganda on related visa issues and provide necessary care and assistance to affected individuals.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also reminds the public that if travel to Uganda is necessary in the near future, they should carefully assess the potential risks.
