Poisonous mushrooms can cause severe poisoning, even death.

🍄Mistakenly eating poisonous mushrooms, a migrant worker narrowly escapes death but faces lifelong dialysis After heavy rains, various mushrooms that look very similar to edible ones often sprout in mountainous areas, grasslands, or parks, making it easy for people to mistake them and eat them, leading to poisoning. Recently, a migrant worker ate wild mushrooms picked by a colleague in the wild. The next day at work, the migrant worker experienced symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and general weakness, and was then rushed to the emergency department of Da Chien General Hospital in Miaoli. Dr. Kuo Wei-jen from the Intensive Care Unit at Da Chien General Hospital stated that after being admitted to the ICU, the migrant worker's condition rapidly deteriorated as the toxins attacked multiple organs, causing rhabdomyolysis, acute liver failure, acute kidney failure, and myocardial damage. The patient even passed brown, tea-colored urine at one point and was in a life-threatening condition. To save the patient's life, the medical team urgently used ECMO (artificial heart-lung machine), a ventilator, and daily prolonged low-flow daily hemodialysis (SLEDD) for emergency treatment. After intensive treatment by the ICU medical team, the patient fortunately no longer depended on ECMO and the ventilator, and their life was saved. However, due to severe and irreversible kidney damage caused by the toxins, the patient will face a long recovery process and long-term hemodialysis in the future. Da Chien General Hospital stated that Taiwan has a hot and humid climate, and there are many types of mushrooms in the mountains and wilderness. Many poisonous mushrooms look very similar to edible ones. Therefore, people should absolutely not casually pick wild mushrooms to eat. Relying solely on the naked eye or "experience" passed down online cannot determine if a mushroom is poisonous. Even a small amount of toxin can cause damage to organs throughout the body and even threaten life. To prevent accidental ingestion of poisonous mushrooms, Dr. Kuo Wei-jen proposed "3 important principles to prevent mushroom poisoning": ✅1. Do not pick, do not eat: Absolutely do not rely on experience to pick or eat unknown mushrooms and plants from the wild. Mushrooms sold in the market that have passed inspection and meet standards are the safest choice. ✅2. Do not believe folk remedies: Concepts spread online such as "brightly colored mushrooms are poisonous," "cooking can remove toxins," or "mushrooms bitten by insects are not poisonous" have no scientific basis. Absolutely do not gamble with your life. ✅3. Keep mushroom samples, seek immediate medical attention: If you accidentally eat mushrooms and experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or dizziness, seek medical attention immediately. At the same time, be sure to keep the remaining mushroom samples or take photos as evidence to help doctors quickly identify the type of toxin and provide appropriate treatment.
