[International] Spain Temporarily Restores Border Controls, Checks 12 Flights from Italy at 6 Major Airports, Affecting About 200 People

Reuters reported today (9th) that on the first day of re-implementing border control checks following a dispute with Italy over illegal immigration, Spain inspected about 200 passengers arriving from Italy at six major Spanish airports.
The Spanish Ministry of the Interior stated late on the 8th that its ministry inspected a total of 199 passengers from 12 flights originating from Italy at airports in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Bilbao, Alicante, and Valencia. Spain announced on the 7th that following corresponding measures taken by Rome, border checks on flights and ships from Italy would continue until September 7th. Italy stated that these measures were triggered by the influx of approximately 72,000 people into Ceuta, Spain's exclave in North Africa, on July 30th.
Italy suspended its European Union (EU) Schengen Area borderless travel arrangement with Spain starting August 1st, stating that border controls would be maintained until at least August 15th.
Rome indicated that this move would not affect Spanish or other European citizens traveling to Italy, but would involve targeted checks on non-European passengers arriving by plane or ship from Spain.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, in an interview published today, told "Corriere della Sera": "Once there is no longer any risk, we hope to lift the suspension as soon as possible."
The Schengen Area allows for passport-free travel between 29 European countries, although member states can temporarily re-implement border controls for reasons of security or public order. (Editor: Xu Jiayuan)
