Indonesian officials said today (10th) that a fire that burned 550 hectares in Mount Bromo National Park, East Java, Indonesia, has been extinguished, but new hotspots have appeared near the crater.
Gatot Soebroto, head of the local disaster management agency, told Reuters that the fire, which started on August 3rd, had burned 550 hectares (1360 acres) as of the 9th and has now been completely extinguished.
However, Gatot said that authorities found new hotspots around the crater, covering an area of about 20 hectares. "The fire around the crater may spread further today."
He pointed out that authorities have deployed over 120 personnel, 3 fire helicopters, drones, and fire trucks to extinguish the fire.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but Gatot said authorities suspect negligence.
