[Life] 65 Taiwanese Universities Gather in Indonesia to Compete for Southeast Asian Student Market

The "2026 Indonesia Taiwan Higher Education Fair" opened on August 1st in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. 65 Taiwanese universities and 165 representatives from various institutions are exhibiting in five cities: Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Surabaya, and Medan, from August 1st to 9th. This is the largest overseas Taiwan Higher Education Fair in 2026. Ambassador Hung Chen-jung of the Taipei Economic and Trade Office in Indonesia stated that nearly 19,000 Indonesian students are currently studying in Taiwan, making Indonesia the second-largest source of international students for Taiwan, after Vietnam. Taiwan possesses a complete semiconductor industry supply chain, which not only offers high-tech programs to international students but also provides internship opportunities during their studies and employment prospects after graduation.
The Ministry of Education pointed out that Indonesia has the fourth-largest population globally and the largest population in Southeast Asia, with an average age of around 30, meaning a very high proportion of young students. Indonesia's young demographic structure aligns perfectly with Taiwan's higher education internationalization strategy, making it a key market for overseas recruitment. In 2025, there were 13,957 degree-seeking Indonesian students and 4,783 non-degree-seeking students, primarily studying in the fields of engineering and industry, business administration, and information and communication technology.
The Ministry of Education emphasized that Taiwan's higher education boasts internationally recognized quality and a diverse, friendly learning environment. According to the 2027 QS World University Rankings, four Taiwanese universities are ranked among the top 200 globally, eight are in the top 500, and 27 are listed in the world university rankings, demonstrating excellent educational quality and international competitiveness. Furthermore, Taiwanese universities offer a rich selection of fully English-taught programs. Coupled with Taiwan's free, diverse, and safe society, it has become an ideal study destination for international students. Many universities also provide prayer rooms and halal food for Indonesian Muslim students, ensuring a comfortable study experience in Taiwan.
The Ministry of Education noted that this education fair is co-organized by the Federation of Alumni Associations of Taiwan Universities in Indonesia and the Overseas Chinese Affairs Council, with guidance from the Ministry of Education and the Taipei Economic and Trade Office in Indonesia.
