According to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations of India, India's electric vehicle (cars, motorcycles, three-wheelers) sales in July set a new record of 327,901 units, a year-on-year increase of up to 66%. Indians believe that the attractive appearance, easy maintenance, and lower cost of electric vehicles are the main reasons they are buying them at this stage. India's monthly electric vehicle sales have repeatedly hit new highs. In June of this year, a record of 306,220 units was set, a year-on-year increase of 63%, bringing the overall penetration rate of electric vehicles to over 12% for the first time. In July, sales reached a new high of nearly 330,000 units. The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) report indicates that nearly 1 in 8 vehicles currently on the market are electric. In July, the main driver of electric vehicle sales growth came from electric motorcycles, with sales reaching 204,362 units, an 88.32% year-on-year increase compared to 108,516 electric motorcycles sold in July 2025. Sai Giridhar, Vice President of the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations of India, pointed out that 1 in 8 cars currently on the market are electric, and electric vehicles are no longer a backup option for consumers when choosing a vehicle. He also mentioned that commercial electric vehicle growth is nearly double, and the adoption of electric vehicles by commercial fleets has moved from trial stages to mass ordering and procurement. Rohit Raj, an Indian citizen who test-sat an electric car at a mall in New Delhi, told reporters that he is considering changing his car. After looking at several options, he found that electric vehicles are more attractive in terms of both appearance and interior. Raj said, "The government is strongly encouraging everyone to use electric vehicles. Now, when buying an electric vehicle, the discounts from the government and dealerships are quite good. An attractive price will be a major factor in convincing me." Raj Kumar, an Indian citizen who runs a car rental company, told reporters that he has two cars at home and currently has six cars for rent. His personal car has already been replaced with an electric vehicle. "I feel that the maintenance burden for electric vehicles is lighter, and owning a car is relatively easier, so I am considering gradually updating my company's vehicles." Kumar said, "The company currently has an SUV that a client has been renting long-term. The client finds the car to be very new and comfortable, especially quiet when driving, and is very satisfied. Therefore, I am considering gradually replacing the vehicles, which I believe will improve business and lower my costs." Business Standard reported that electric three-wheeler sales in July were 87,055 units, an increase of 25.3% compared to 69,477 units in the same period last year. Electric commercial vehicle sales in July were 3,556 units, an increase of 168.6% compared to 1,324 units in July 2025.
