The Asia Little League Championship, originally scheduled to start on the 9th, was postponed by one day due to Typhoon Wipha. The Taiwan team played their first match against Hong Kong today (10th), with the young Taiwanese players showcasing their hitting and pitching prowess to defeat Hong Kong 23-1 in 4 innings. Tomorrow (11th), they will face South Korea in a crucial match, aiming for victory.
This year's Asia Little League Championship is being held in Guali, Hangzhou, China. The Taiwan team's training rights were secured by the championship team of the Hua Nan Financial Holdings Cup National Little League Baseball Championship, the New Taipei City team, coached by Dai Han-chao.
A total of 8 teams are participating in this tournament. Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Thailand are in Group B, while Group A includes host China, Japan, Pakistan, and the Philippines. The games were originally scheduled to start yesterday but were postponed by one day due to the typhoon. Taiwan's first match against Hong Kong today was still affected by continuous rain.
The Taiwan team aggressively scored from the start. In the top of the 1st inning, they loaded the bases with walks and hits. Chang Yu-chi hit a bases-clearing triple, driving in 3 runs. Lin Cheng-hua followed with a hit to bring in the 4th run, and another run scored due to an error and a pitcher's violation. They then added 2 more runs with walks and hits, and Peng Yu-rui hit a double for another 2 runs. Lin En added another 2 runs with a hit. In total, Taiwan batted around, scoring 9 runs in the first inning.
In the top of the 2nd inning, Taiwan scored their 10th run due to consecutive walks, a pitcher's violation, and an error, followed by 2 more runs from consecutive ground balls. In the top of the 3rd inning, Taiwan had another big inning, capitalizing on the Hong Kong team's pitching and defensive issues, scoring an additional 11 runs and reaching the threshold for an early game termination.
Taiwan's starting pitcher today was Liu Chen-hsi. Although he issued a hit-by-pitch in the bottom of the 1st, he struck out all three outs. In the bottom of the 2nd, relief pitcher Tien Yu-hsiang came in but had some control issues, issuing three consecutive walks and being removed without recording an out.
Taiwan then brought in Pan Lei to relieve. He allowed Hong Kong to score 1 run via a sacrifice bunt, which was charged to Tien Yu-hsiang. Lin En pitched one scoreless inning in relief, securing the win for the team. Pan Lei pitched two scoreless innings in relief with 4 strikeouts, earning the win.
Taiwan collected 15 hits today, while Hong Kong issued 10 walks and committed 4 errors. The Taiwan team's offense and defense performed well, securing their first victory. Chang Yu-chi had 3 hits and 5 RBIs, and Peng Yu-rui had 2 hits and 6 RBIs, showing the most outstanding hitting performance.
