[International] Australia and Vietnam Strengthen Military Cooperation to Counter China's Influence

Australia and Vietnam announced today (11th) that the two countries will expand military cooperation to jointly counter Beijing's growing influence in the Pacific and South China Sea.
Following a meeting between Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and President To Lam in Canberra, the Australian capital, both sides stated that their militaries will cooperate more closely on maritime security and conduct joint exercises.
Albanese told reporters after the meeting: "Our defense industries, and our militaries, will cooperate more."
Albanese said: "A world that is full of uncertainty today means that it is more important than ever for friends to cooperate in all aspects, including economic and social environments, to address the challenges we face."
Vietnam is one of the countries with territorial disputes with China in the South China Sea. Beijing claims sovereignty over almost the entire South China Sea, despite an international tribunal ruling that its claims have no legal basis.
Australia is undertaking its largest military expansion in a generation, while the US military presence in Australian territory continues to increase, in response to China's military expansion.
Australian Minister for Defence Richard Marles stated today that strengthening cooperation with Vietnam will "directly contribute to stability and security."
The announcement comes as Australia and Vietnam have reached a series of agreements, including a commitment to enhance "economic resilience" and to reopen the Vietnamese market to wild game, including kangaroo meat. (Editor: Zhong Jinlong)
