The Ministry of National Defense of the People's Republic of China announced on the 11th that the People's Liberation Army and the Indonesian Navy will hold a navigation exercise in the waters east of Taiwan in mid-August, which has attracted attention. The Indonesian Navy responded today (12th) that after its warships concluded exercises in Russia, they will conduct "passing exercises" with countries along the route on their way back to the country. These are not combat-oriented but a naval tradition when passing through the waters of other countries.
The Ministry of National Defense of the People's Republic of China announced on the 11th that in mid-August, the naval vessel Honghe will hold a navigation exercise with the Indonesian Navy frigate "Raden Eddy Martadinata" (KRI I Gusti Ngurah Rai-332) in the "waters east of Taiwan Island," focusing on communication drills and at-sea replenishment.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a press release this morning stating that in response to China's repeated disregard for international norms and responsibilities, further escalating regional tensions, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemns China's arbitrary and irresponsible actions. As a responsible member of the region, Taiwan will uphold its consistent stance of defending its territory, actively safeguard the sovereignty and sovereign rights of the waters east of Taiwan, and cooperate with all parties in the region to jointly ensure freedom of navigation and regional security and stability in the relevant waters.
Indonesian Navy Information Service Head Tunggul (M.Han.) responded today through a statement to CNA that the KRI I Gusti Ngurah Rai-332 (Indonesian Navy frigate "Raden Eddy Martadinata") will conduct "passing exercises" (PASSEX) with countries along the route on its way back to Indonesia after concluding exercises in Vladivostok, Russia.
Tunggul stated that these exercises are not combat-oriented in nature but are a common naval tradition conducted when passing through the waters of other countries.
He emphasized that these "passing exercise" activities are also friendly exchanges commonly carried out by navies of various countries, aiming to embody camaraderie among naval personnel and the maritime diplomacy carried by warships. Indonesia's free and proactive foreign policy provides opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation with any country, including conducting "passing exercise" activities with multiple nations.
"Passing exercises" are joint training conducted by two or more navies when they meet at sea. Their main purpose is to enhance communication, coordination, and cooperation capabilities among the navies of various countries to respond to joint rescue or maritime security missions.
