[International] UK By-Election Becomes Farce as Far-Right Leader Faces 'Count Binface'

An East of England by-election in Clacton, triggered by the resignation of far-right leader Nigel Farage, will be held today (13th). However, with mainstream parties boycotting the election, Farage's main opponent will be a satirical candidate named 'Count Binface'. Farage has been the Member of Parliament for this constituency since July 2024, but traditional parties are boycotting this by-election, condemning Farage's resignation and candidacy as a publicity stunt. Polling stations will open at 7 AM local time (2 PM Taiwan time) with 34 candidates running, meaning Farage will face dozens of fringe candidates, including Count Binface. As a key proponent of Brexit, Farage has maintained a hardline stance. His anti-immigration party, Reform UK, won seats in the general election in May this year and has held a polling lead for 18 consecutive months since early last year. Farage has framed this by-election as 'the people of Clacton versus the establishment,' calling media and official investigations into his finances and suspicious donations to Reform UK a 'setup'. In a statement on the evening of the 12th, Farage said, 'Britain needs reform, Britain wants reform, Britain demands a general election.' Farage is widely expected to retain his seat in eastern Essex, a constituency that overwhelmingly supported Brexit in the 2016 referendum. Political analysts are downplaying the broader significance of this by-election. Will Jennings, a professor of political science at the University of Southampton, told AFP: 'This by-election is unlikely to have a major impact on British politics.' Jennings added: 'Even if he wins, it won't dispel questions about the finances of Farage or Reform UK, so it's likely to be a wasted summer for all parties.' Jennings believes: 'Once Farage returns to Parliament, everything will go back to square one.' Voting will close at 10 PM local time, with counting to begin immediately. The results are expected to be announced by 7 AM on the 14th. Turnout is likely to be significantly lower than the 59% in the 2024 general election, as neither of the two major parties, Labour and the Conservatives, fielded candidates. Farage was elected MP two years ago on his 8th attempt with 46% of the vote. This by-election has the largest number of candidates in its history. Most candidates are running as independents, making the ballot paper nearly a meter long. The satirical candidate 'Count Binface,' wearing a grey bin on his head, a cape, and silver armor, has attracted global media attention. According to a poll by Survation, he is expected to win one-fifth of the vote. This candidate, who calls himself a 'space warrior,' continues the long tradition of satirical candidates in British history. This trend has reached its peak in this by-election, with even the 'Official Monster Raving Loony Party' fielding three candidates. Stijn van Kessel, a professor of political science at Queen Mary University of London, told AFP: 'Farage's plan to turn this by-election into a serious political contest has failed.'
