[Finance] International Focus on Taiwan's Energy Risks; MOEA: Diversified Procurement Ensures Stable Power Supply

Some media reported that the results of war game simulations by international research institutions have impacted Taiwan's energy supply chain. The Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) stated today (13th) that last year, liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports came from as many as 14 countries, and coal sources covered Asia, America, and Africa. The government continues to promote diversified procurement sources and expand renewable energy construction to ensure stable domestic gas and power supply, urging the public to rest assured.
An international research institution conducted a war game simulation, modeling China pressuring Taiwan with energy supply. The MOEA explained today that Taiwan's energy procurement has long implemented a strategy of "diversified sources and multi-pronged layout," combined with medium-to-long-term contracts, flexible spot market dispatch, and safety stock management mechanisms to ensure an uninterrupted supply.
The MOEA mentioned that by 2025, LNG import sources will reach 14 countries; coal import sources cover Asia, America, and Africa, primarily from Australia, Indonesia, and Colombia. Furthermore, CPC Corporation is proactively expanding gas procurement from politically and economically stable regions with close cooperation. In addition to signing a 25-year contract with the largest U.S. LNG exporter, Cheniere Energy, in February this year for 1.2 million metric tons annually, there are plans to increase the proportion of U.S. LNG imports to 25% by 2029.
Concurrently, shipping vessels will be appropriately diversified to enhance transportation stability and dispatch flexibility.
The MOEA stated that in the overall electricity supply strategy, accelerating the construction of renewable energy is key to enhancing energy autonomy. The government is actively developing renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, geothermal, and small hydropower. Indigenous renewable energy already accounts for a certain proportion, which can enhance the nation's energy supply resilience.
The MOEA emphasized that in the face of various extreme scenario challenges in the future, the government will continue to strengthen national energy supply resilience through diversified procurement strategies, stable long-term contracts for natural gas between Taiwan and the U.S., and renewable energy construction, ensuring stable domestic gas and power supply.
