Regarding the unreasonable demands and obstruction by the African nation of Uganda, which is implementing its "One China Policy" against ROC passport holders, Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung stated in an interview at the Diplomatic Academy today (14th) that some countries use the so-called "One China" principle as a visa or entry barrier, which naturally affects bilateral relations. The ROC government will respond and handle this matter based on the principles of reciprocity and mutual benefit, while also calling on ROC citizens to temporarily refrain from traveling to high-risk places like Uganda. #Reported by reporter Wang Chao-kun#
Three Taiwanese businesspeople and their family members, holding ROC passports, were detained by Ugandan airport immigration officials upon arrival. Although they were eventually allowed to enter, their passports were unreasonably held until they used Chinese passports to get an entry stamp, with officials stating this was to implement Uganda's "One China Policy."
Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung stated that he immediately instructed the ROC Representative Office in Somaliland to investigate the matter, and negotiations are ongoing. He also urged ROC citizens to carefully assess the necessity and potential risks before traveling to Uganda and to temporarily postpone their trips. He also reminded ROC nationals in Uganda to remain vigilant and maintain close contact with the Representative Office in Somaliland. Lin Chia-lung said: "(Original sound) For some countries that use the so-called 'One China' principle as a visa or entry barrier, it naturally affects bilateral relations, especially in economic, trade, and cultural exchanges. In diplomacy, we handle these matters based on the principles of reciprocity and mutual benefit. During this process, we also call on our citizens to pay attention and avoid traveling to high-risk areas like Uganda."
Regarding the ROC nationals who were recently obstructed from entering Uganda, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that it was aware of the situation immediately. The ROC Representative Office in Somaliland and the Ugandan Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce have provided necessary care and assistance to the affected nationals. (Editor: Song Wan-yuan)
