A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Flores Island in eastern Indonesia early this morning, reportedly causing two deaths. Wijayanto, head of the earthquake and tsunami center at the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), stated that the tsunami warning has been lifted. According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the shallow earthquake's epicenter was located offshore north of Flores Island, approximately 68 kilometers northwest of the town of Ende. This prompted a large number of residents to evacuate to higher ground. Wijayanto told reporters in Jakarta, "We have lifted the (tsunami warning), but we will continue to monitor sea levels." Berton Suar Pelita Panjaitan, spokesperson for Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), stated that the strong earthquake resulted in two fatalities, and the extent of the damage is still being assessed. Panjaitan informed reporters in Jakarta, "As of now, two deaths have been reported," one male and one female. He added, "Once the relevant statistics are confirmed, we will officially announce the final casualty figures and the extent of building damage caused by the disaster."
