A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Flores Island in eastern Indonesia on the 15th. According to disaster management officials, the death toll has risen to 47, and rescue personnel are continuing to search for survivors in the rubble.
According to Agence France-Presse, the Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) revised the death toll from 40 to 47 on the evening of the 15th. Rescue official Fathur Rahman stated that the earthquake also injured 50 people.
Head of the National Disaster Management Agency, Suharyanto, stated earlier that people were trapped in multiple buildings.
Suharyanto said, "These buildings will be the initial search targets for the disaster response team."
The National Disaster Management Agency reported that the earthquake occurred off the coast of Flores Island, a famous tourist destination in eastern Indonesia, causing damage to nearly 160 houses, dozens of educational and health facilities, and other public buildings in the area.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) announced that preparations have begun to provide assistance to approximately 2,000 displaced people temporarily housed in shelters.
The Indonesian government has dispatched 50,000 aid items, totaling 275 metric tons, to the disaster area. President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen also indicated that assistance would be provided through the European Union's Copernicus Programme Earth observation satellite.
