A magnitude 7.7 strong earthquake occurred off the coast of Flores Island in eastern Indonesia early this morning (15th). Officials from relevant authorities stated that at least 38 people have lost their lives so far. According to Agence France-Presse, the head of Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency, Suharyanto, stated at a press conference: "Confirmed 38 deaths, 2 seriously injured, 11 slightly injured, and approximately 2,000 people evacuated voluntarily." Data from the U.S. Geological Survey shows that the epicenter of this strong earthquake was located off the coast north of Flores Island, with a focal depth of 10 kilometers. Several aftershocks occurred in the same sea area afterward. Indonesian authorities issued an initial tsunami warning after the strong earthquake, but the warning has since been lifted. Rescue personnel are currently searching for survivors in the rubble of collapsed buildings on Flores Island. In 1992, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake also occurred off the coast of Flores Island, which triggered a tsunami and caused over 2,000 deaths.
