The National Immigration Agency's Border Affairs Corps, Songshan Airport Detachment, recently discovered that Chinese nationals applying to come to Taiwan under the guise of visiting relatives were found during entry inspections to have purposes inconsistent with their approved permits. Seven cases were detected from January to June, all of whom were denied entry and repatriated. The agency will continue to rigorously scrutinize entry purposes.
The Songshan Airport Border Affairs Detachment of the National Immigration Agency's Border Affairs Corps stated today (21st) that during recent entry inspections at Songshan Airport, they apprehended individuals from mainland China who had applied to come to Taiwan under names such as visiting relatives, but entry inspections revealed that their actual purposes for coming to Taiwan were inconsistent with their approved permits.
The Immigration Agency's Songshan Airport Border Affairs Detachment statistics show 26 cases denied entry in 2024, an increase to 55 cases last year, and 7 cases detected from January to June this year.
Cases detected this year have been denied entry and repatriated.
The Immigration Agency stated that while some individuals applied to come to Taiwan for reasons such as visiting relatives, upon inspection and confirmation by immigration officers, it was found that some individuals from mainland China came to Taiwan for visits but were completely unfamiliar with the information of their relatives, and were even involved in illegal work or other violations, indicating that their actual purposes for coming to Taiwan were inconsistent with their applications.
The Immigration Agency's Songshan Airport Detachment stated that they will continue to precisely target suspicious individuals, deny entry according to law, and intercept illegal activities outside the country once concrete evidence is found.
The Immigration Agency stated that individuals from mainland China who obtain legal permits to enter Taiwan must still undergo inspection by immigration officers upon arrival to confirm their actual purposes for coming to Taiwan and their itinerary. If travelers are found to be engaged in activities inconsistent with their approved purposes, they can be denied entry and repatriated according to law to maintain border security.
It is understood that most of the cases detected by the Immigration Agency at Songshan Airport involved applications to come to Taiwan for visits, with approved stays ranging from 1 to 3 months. In many cases, applicants would stay for the full duration, but records such as mobile phone conversations revealed that applicants might have been working odd jobs in Taiwan through their relatives in Taiwan to earn money.
The Immigration Agency stated that border inspections are an important line of defense for maintaining national security and social order. Obtaining a legal permit to enter Taiwan does not mean one can engage in any activity; one must still abide by laws and the approved purposes after arriving in Taiwan.
Lin Ching-fen, captain of the Border Affairs Corps of the National Immigration Agency, said through news materials that travelers applying for permits to come to Taiwan should truthfully state their purposes for coming to Taiwan during entry inspections and engage in activities according to the approved purposes. They should not apply to come to Taiwan under the guise of visiting relatives and engage in activities inconsistent with their approved purposes. Those found to be in violation will be denied entry according to law and will be required to bear legal responsibility. (Editor: Song Wanyuan)
