Taiwanese men's doubles badminton pair Lee Jhe-Huei and Yang Po-Hsuan today (21st) defeated the world No. 2 Indonesian pair Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri in the quarterfinals of the World Badminton Championships with scores of 21-19 and 21-16, advancing to the semifinals and guaranteeing at least a bronze medal. This is also their first World Championships medal since they started partnering.
Lee Jhe-Huei and Yang Po-Hsuan, ranked 17th in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) men's doubles, faced the world No. 2 Indonesian pair Fajar and Fikri for the second time in their careers. In their previous encounter, the Taiwanese pair lost in straight games.
In today's match, the Taiwanese pair maintained good form from the start and took the lead. Towards the end of the game, they held an advantage of 18-12 and secured four game points at 20-16. Although they were then chased to a one-point difference due to excessive unforced errors, they narrowly held on to secure the victory.
In the second game, Lee Jhe-Huei and Yang Po-Hsuan played even more assertively. When the score was tied at 5-5, they gradually widened the gap. During this period, they performed exceptionally well in both their rotation and defense, as well as their aggressive play in the first three shots. Coupled with Fajar's poor form and frequent errors, the Taiwanese pair secured four match points after Lee Jhe-Huei's smash, leading 20-16.
Lee Jhe-Huei and Yang Po-Hsuan wasted no time, winning the point on the third shot of the serve and defeating their strong opponents in straight games to advance to the semifinals.
Lee Jhe-Huei and Yang Po-Hsuan have been partners since 2019. They have won five Super Series titles, four of which were Super 300 and one was Super 100. This is also the first time they have reached the semifinals in an international competition this year.
The Taiwanese badminton team has won 3 silver and 6 bronze medals in previous World Championships. The only men's doubles bronze medal to date was won by Chen Hung-ling and Wang Chi-lin in 2018.
