According to records from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on the 28th, British far-right commentator Milo Yiannopoulos has been detained. The British celebrity commentator had previously called for ICE checkpoints to be set up in American supermarkets and for immediate deportation of those unable to prove their legal residency status in the U.S. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security issued a statement saying that 41-year-old Yiannopoulos was arrested by ICE on the 27th at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport and is facing a final order of removal. The statement referred to him as an "illegal immigrant from the United Kingdom." The statement noted that Yiannopoulos legally entered the U.S. through New York City in May 2019 but "chose to overstay his visa, violating our nation's laws." "Because he failed to appear for his immigration hearing on time, an immigration judge issued a final order of removal against Yiannopoulos on July 22." The U.S. Department of Homeland Security stated that he will remain in ICE custody while awaiting deportation. Reuters was unable to immediately contact the commentator for comment, and it is unclear if he has retained legal counsel. Being detained by ICE is an ironic turn for the political commentator known for his far-right rhetoric. He has made anti-Islam remarks and supported enforcement measures even harsher than those of U.S. President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown. (Editor: Liu Xiang-hua)
