✨ Taipei Streets at 4 AM: When Empathy Transcends Indifference

Around 3 to 4 AM today, on my way home from Ximending by scooter, as I passed the intersection opposite the National Taxation Bureau, I witnessed a shocking scene – someone had fallen in the middle of the road with their vehicle, motionless. The streets were fast-paced late at night. My friend and I didn't hesitate and immediately turned back to check. Almost at the same time, a delivery rider also arrived on his scooter and stopped to help. After a quick discussion, the three of us approached him. However, his condition was very unusual; he couldn't even speak a complete sentence. We asked him, "Do you need us to call the police or an ambulance?" He waved his hand and mumbled, "No need..." But seeing his dazed and unstable state, we all agreed that leaving him there was too dangerous. So, we decided to proactively report it to the police. In less than 10 minutes, police cars arrived swiftly. They professionally guided the man to the roadside for basic safety and health checks. During the wait, we chatted and learned that the kind delivery rider who had helped was actually just a university student studying in Tamsui. After returning home, this late-night incident left me deeply reflective, leading to several profound realizations: Taipei's efficiency and sense of security: The police arrived extremely quickly, and their handling of the situation was professional and responsible, giving us a deep sense of security in this city. Humanity's warmth still exists: Many might think, "Just ignore him, don't get involved." But at that moment, all we could think was: if he remained lying on the road, it would not only obstruct traffic but also pose a severe risk if a vehicle in a blind spot hit him. Pure goodwill: Regardless of the outcome, extending a helping hand at the most critical moment with the simplest intention might save a life or a family. Dispelling the Gen Z stereotype: Our generation of young people is not indifferent or neglectful. We still possess strong empathy and care about social public safety and warmth. Compassion through empathy: Imagine if it were our own family member who unfortunately encountered an accident on the road and was fortunate enough to receive help from strangers and return home safely.
