[International] Taiwan Ranks Sixth in Thai Foreign Investment, Semiconductor Cooperation Deepens

The Thai-Taiwan Times reported today (31st) that the enthusiasm of Taiwanese enterprises investing in Thailand continues to rise. Peter Lan, Representative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Thailand, stated that Thailand is an important economic partner for Taiwan, and there is still room for deepening cooperation between the two sides in semiconductors and other high-tech industries.
By 2025, Taiwan has become Thailand's sixth-largest source of foreign direct investment, with an investment amount exceeding 29 billion Thai baht (27.7 billion New Taiwan dollars). Bilateral trade between Taiwan and Thailand is close to 20 billion US dollars, indicating a continuous expansion of economic and industrial chain linkages between the two sides.
Lan pointed out that more and more Taiwanese companies are showing interest in investing in Thailand, and the semiconductor and high-tech industries are expected to become important areas for future cooperation. However, how Thailand positions its industrial development direction and whether the government can propose clear policies will directly affect the industries and projects in which the two sides can further cooperate.
After decades of investment, Taiwan has become one of the world's most important semiconductor manufacturing bases. Lan stated that Taiwan's semiconductor industry is not solely developed by enterprises but is the result of long-term joint investment by the government, private enterprises, and research institutions, integrating engineering talent and R&D resources to gradually build comprehensive industrial capabilities.
He pointed out that Thailand has listed semiconductors and other high-tech industries as important future development directions, thus there is a basis for cooperation between the two sides. However, Thailand must first establish a clear industrial positioning and policy direction to further identify the most suitable areas for Taiwan-Thailand cooperation. He also emphasized that continuous communication and discussion are important conditions for expanding future cooperation, and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Thailand is willing to maintain dialogue channels.
According to data cited by Lan, in 2025, Taiwan was Thailand's sixth-largest source of foreign direct investment, with an investment amount exceeding 29 billion Thai baht. In the same year, bilateral trade between Taiwan and Thailand was close to 20 billion US dollars, equivalent to 662 billion Thai baht, reflecting the substantial economic and trade foundation already established between the two sides.
In addition to investment and trade, exchanges of people between the two sides are also very close. Currently, over 200,000 Taiwanese reside and work in Thailand, forming a community base accumulated from multiple waves of Taiwanese businesses investing in Thailand. Tourism and labor exchanges have also become important pillars of Taiwan-Thailand relations.
Lan stated that Thai tourists are currently Taiwan's eighth-largest source of tourists, while Taiwan is the main destination for overseas workers from Thailand, indicating that the economic relationship between the two sides has extended from corporate investment to tourism, employment, and people-to-people exchanges.
The importance of technological cooperation is also continuously increasing. Lan pointed out that Taiwan is currently the largest foreign import source of artificial intelligence-related equipment and materials for Thailand. As Thailand actively builds an ecosystem for artificial intelligence and high-tech industries, Taiwan's role in the related supply chain is expected to become even more important.
He stated that the existing cooperation basis between Taiwan and Thailand covers investment, trade, technology, education, and people-to-people exchanges. In the future, they hope to continue cooperating with partners in various fields such as the Thai government, universities, and enterprises. Regarding Taiwan-Thailand exchanges, Lan emphasized that economic and cultural cooperation are important development directions for both sides and can continue to serve as a basis for deepening exchanges and cooperation.
Amid the continuous restructuring of the global semiconductor and artificial intelligence supply chains, Thailand is actively seeking high-tech industry investments, while Taiwan possesses a mature semiconductor manufacturing and technology supply chain. The clarity of Thailand's future policy positioning, investment environment, and bilateral communication mechanisms will become important indicators for Taiwanese businesses expanding their presence and for Taiwan-Thailand high-tech cooperation.
