[International] Amidst concerns of overburdened Navy in Iran conflict, Trump nominates Hung Cao to lead the Navy

The Associated Press reported that U.S. President Donald Trump announced on the 1st that he nominated acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao for the position. This appointment of a seasoned naval officer with combat experience comes amidst concerns that some Navy personnel are already overburdened by the war in Iran.
Cao had been serving as acting secretary since the unexpected and unexplained departure of former Navy Secretary John Phelan in late April.
Unlike Phelan, who had no military background and no prior civilian leadership experience in the military, Cao served for 25 years in the Navy as a special operations officer and served alongside SEALs and special forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Cao was a refugee who immigrated to the United States from Vietnam as a child. He served in the Navy for over 20 years, with deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Somalia.
Trump stated on social media, "I am pleased to nominate a true warrior," urging the Senate to "swiftly confirm this warrior's nomination."
Cao posted on social media, saying, "It is the honor of a lifetime to lead the great warriors of the Navy and Marine Corps."
Cao's nomination comes at a time when some, including Democratic members of Congress, believe Trump is overburdening the Navy.
The U.S. aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln has been deployed for nine months in support of the war in Iran, including a record-breaking continuous period at sea.
Previous reports indicated that the USS Abraham Lincoln, which has been on continuous mission at sea since November 2025, is experiencing severe work and life conditions, with deteriorating crew mental health, raising increasing concerns about the deployment. (Editor: Chung Chin-lung)
